FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 12, 2008

Team Academy” Announced

Katy, TX – Will a woman angler win the 2009 Bassmaster Classic?  It can happen, thanks to a partnership between the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS) and Academy Sports and Outdoors.  BASS runs the Women’s Bassmaster Tour (WBT) and Academy Sports and Outdoors is Presenting Sponsor of the WBT.

In addition, Academy fielded a team of 12 top WBT anglers to represent “Team Academy.”   Team Academy members include: Kathy Magers- TX (Team Captain,), Robin Babb - TX, (Co-Captain), Sammie Jo Denyes- AL/FL,  Sheri Glasgow-OK, Susan Gregory-MS,  Jan Heavener-AR, Debra Hengst-TX, Jo Dee Lake-AL, Tammy Richardson – AR, Juanita Robinson-TX, Judy Wong- LA, and Pam Martin-Wells- GA.

Sponsoring the Women’s Bassmaster Tour plus a dozen Team Academy anglers further underscores the company’s commitment to women in sports. The first WBT event of 2008 takes place April 10-12 on Lake Lewisville near Dallas.  The Academy Sports and Outdoors store located in Lewisville will host the weigh in at the store.  For more information, visit
www.Academy.com

BASS officials created the WBT pathway to the Classic as part of its commitment to grow the WBT and to grow its partnership with Academy.  Academy and the Women’s Bassmaster Tour teamed up to grow the sport of professional women’s bass fishing.  WBT anglers now have a direct qualifying route into bass fishing’s premier event, the Bassmaster Classic.

Here’s how it works.  The WBT will hold four regular season tournaments in 2008 and a WBT Championship in the Fall 2008.  The top WBT angler in the season-long points standings not only earns the title of Toyota Women’s Bassmaster Tour Angler of the Year, but earns a berth into the 2009 Bassmaster Classic.  To accommodate the WBT Angler of the Year, BASS will extend 51 invitations to the Classic.

“Next year promises to be a historic year, with the first female angler qualifying for the Bassmaster Classic,” said Tom Ricks, vice president and general manager of BASS. “The WBT continues to receive some well-deserved attention and we are excited about this opportunity for the circuit to grow.”

With the sponsorship agreement, the final day weigh-ins of WBT events will be held at Academy store locations near the fishery. The Katy, Texas based company is the exclusive sporting goods retailer of the Women’s Bassmaster Tour.

“Academy Sports + Outdoors is pleased to sponsor the 2008 Women’s Bassmaster Tour,” said Jerry de Bin, Academy’s Director of Outdoor Marketing. “With 105 stores in 11 southern states and growing, Academy is ideally positioned to grow the Women’s Bassmaster Tour.  We are a southern company and we do business where bass fishing is a way of life. Academy already supports female athletes in our core business.  Sponsoring the WBT and Team Academy are just further proof.”

Academy Sports + Outdoors is one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, operating 105 stores in 11 southern states.

Size Does Matter
Jo Dee partners with the Boys of Southern Outdoors America to promote one of the most innovative baits on the market, The Longshank Lures.  Developed by President Scott Smith's grandfather, Frank E. Smith ("Daddy Frank's"), the Longshank line of spinnerbaits and buzzbaits have revolutionized the industry by creating a longer hook to eliminate the need for the pesky trailer hook.  The long hook ensures a greater hook-up ratio and lets anglers get into grass and timber that would almost be impossible with a trailer hook.  As any angler that uses spinnerbaits knows, many strikes are missed because the Bass is just swatting at the bait or biting at the blades...which ends up just being a strike and not a catch.  The Longshank spinnerbait nearly eliminates this, hooking the fish many times on the outside of the mouth and head...which ensures catching and not just fishing.

Amistad - Review
Well I had a good tournament and as usual learned a lot.  I went into the tournament with a great feeling, finding good fish during practice I just knew I was on a good pattern.  For my first "Pro" tournament my goals were to learn the giant lake, find fish and have some fish to weigh to get points on the board.  I accomplished all of my goals.  I didn't blow them out of the water but I did accomplish them.  The fish I found during practice moved or shut down during the tournament and not adjusting quick enough was one of my rookie mistakes.   The changing weather conditions moved my fish and I figured out too late what I was to do to get them to bite.  I can definitely say if we go back I will know how to fish that lake more effectively.

During practice we found some very nice fish.  Jay caught his biggest fish ever unfortunately there were other ladies around so we couldn't weigh them or take pictures, slipping them over the side before anyone could see his catch.  We did get a picture of one of the smaller ones when no one was around.  Click to see pictures from Amistad.

BASS Announces 2007 Women's Bassmaster Tour Schedule
5 Events Again in Sophomore Year; Tournaments Are Stand-Alone;
Presented by Triton Boats

#1 Feb. 8-10 Lake Amistad Del Rio, Texas
#2 March 29-31 Lake Dardanelle Russellville, Ark.
#3 May 3-5 Lake Guntersville Guntersville, Ala.
#4 June 14-16 Kentucky Lake Gilbertsville, Ky.
#5 Sept. 20-22 Red River Shreveport, La.

The schedule is out and I am chomping at the bit. I cant wait to start the year on the BIG BASS lake of Amistad! All of these waters should produce good fish and some great competition. Lake Amistad is 1,000 miles away....one way, but it will be worth it. Ish Monroe won the Elite Series tournament out there in March of this year with a 4 day total weight of 104 pounds 8 ounces with a 9 pounder topping it off. This is an average weight per fish of around 4 pounds. Makes my heart go pitter patter. ;-)

Alabama BASS Federation Nation Jr. Bassmaster State Championship
Saturday August 12th I volunteered to take two young boys fishing in the Alabama BASS Federation Jr. Bassmaster State Championship tournament. Justin, 15 and Skyler,11. After spending the morning in the rain and out-running a thunderstorm, hunkering down in a boat house, we had a great day. Justin caught fish all day long on a Shaky Worm Head jig http://www.davisbait.com/ and finesse worm....and the fish just seemed to get bigger. He landed a few over 2 pounds, two over 3 and one 4 pounder, not to mention the many that didn't measure. Skyler learned alot and found a new sport he enjoys and will continue to get better at.

After Justin caught his last fish, a 4 pound Spotted Bass I had a strong feeling that not only would he win big fish but the tournament. Well he did just that, he won big fish and he won his age group 15-18 year olds with over 10 pounds! He now will be headed to the Bassmaster Classic to represent Alabama in the Jr. Bassmaster World Championship. For all the results go to www.albassfednation.com.

Way to go Justin!!  Check out the photo gallery to see them in action.

Jo Dee's bi-monthly fishing column adds new dimension to local paper
Mike Tracy, publisher of the Eastern Jefferson County Courier & Press thought a bi-monthly column from a Professional Lady-Angler would add a new dimension to the paper's sports page which has a circulation of 13,000. This is an exciting venture for Bucki who hopes to keep the Courier's audience entertained as well as informed on the sport of fishing. Her first column came out at the beginning of August. Bucki is Balsa Bound
Lee Sisson, the genius behind many crank baits on the market, has started up his own company designing and building balsa-wood crank baits. Lee is always coming up with unique baits that fish are not used to seeing. Jo Dee is very fortunate to have teamed up with Lee Sisson. His line of crank baits as well as top-water lures and some of his top-secret, never before seen lures, are very exciting and hopefully will help her get into the top 12 slot of anglers invited to the Women's Bassmaster Tour Championship. Check them out www.leesissonlures.com.

Announcing a new Partnership with Davis Bait Company
Jo Dee will be proudly promoting Davis Bait Company's Shaky Head line of jig heads and worms. The Shaky Head technique is her go to so it was an obvious good fit to partner up with William. The Shaky Head worm has been around for decades but William has decided to bring it back. Jo Dee love's the buoyancy of the worms which helps them float better and have more action. They also tend to hold up better than other worms on the market. Check out their website at www.davisbait.com.
